Michigan Needs to Reschedule Halloween 2024
It's hard to believe Halloween is already next month. Before you know it, Michigan's streets will be filled with little ghosts and goblins running from door to door in search of candy. This year, Halloween falls on a Thursday.
Like many Halloweens in the past, the annual tradition of trick-or-treating often falls on a weeknight. There's no way to sugarcoat it—it's always been a hassle. Parents have to race home from work, get dinner on the table, and then somehow get their squirming kids into costumes and out the door by 5 p.m. in some cities. This might have worked back in the day, but not anymore. It’s seriously time for a change.
Even if you don't have kids or yours are all grown up, adults want to celebrate too. But unfortunately, if Halloween falls on a school night, it’s also a work night. No one wants to go to bed early on Halloween.

For years, people have been pushing for Halloween to be moved to either the last weekend before or the weekend after the long-celebrated holiday. I think most people would agree that celebrating Halloween on a Saturday would work better for everyone. We don’t have to wait for other states—this could be a Michigan thing.
The main reason Halloween hasn’t been officially moved to a weekend is tradition. Halloween has always been celebrated on October 31st. Many people see tradition as something that shouldn't change, regardless of convenience.
A few years back, a petition was circulating in hopes of moving the holiday. Apparently, it fell on deaf ears.
If we can't get rid of daylight saving time, I doubt we'll ever get the powers that be to move Halloween to the weekend.
