I absolutely love and hate the idea of a new trail leading to Michigan’s tallest waterfall.

On one hand, Douglass Houghton Falls is special because it doesn’t feel polished. It is rugged and kind of difficult to reach, which is part of the appeal. On the other hand, Michigan is now considering new trails and viewing areas that could make it easier for people to experience without wrecking what makes it special. At least, that’s the hope.

How Michigan Plans to Improve Access to Its Tallest Waterfall

According to MLive, the DNR wants to keep the project moving with a second phase of improvements and about one million dollars in federal funding. The first phase already paid for a new road, parking, and a veterans memorial.

How Tall Is Michigan’s Tallest Waterfall?

Douglass Houghton Falls drops 110 feet in Houghton County between Laurium and Lake Linden just off M-26. It’s Michigan’s tallest waterfall, and it’s every bit as impressive as you’d expect. At least, that’s what I’m told. I’ve only experienced it through videos.

The next phase would extend the walking trail beyond the Hammell Creek bridge and add boardwalks and scenic overlooks. This is not about turning the area into some out-of-control tourist circus. The goal is really just safer access and preservation, not overdevelopment.

This land isn’t just about the waterfall. The state bought the 70-acre property in 2018 from a Vietnam War veteran with the promise that it would be dedicated to Michigan veterans. That’s why it’s now called the Houghton Douglass Falls Veterans Scenic Site.

The site is run as part of McLain State Park. From here, it goes to the National Park Service, and that approval process could take a while.
