It’s no secret that Labor Day weekend is one of the busiest travel times of the year, and with all the construction in Michigan, it’s going to be an absolute mess this year.

Wait, that’s not actually true. In fact, it will be a little smoother than you would expect in spots where traffic is usually a nightmare. It’s not going to be perfect, but it will at least suck a little less.

MDOT says they are holding off on more than half of the road projects across the state to give drivers a little breathing room. Starting at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29, lane restrictions will be lifted on 100 of 164 projects. Work picks right back up Tuesday morning, Sept. 2.

Labor Day weekend is still going to be busy, but at least you will not be stuck in orange-barrel hell everywhere you turn.

Michigan Labor Day Weekend Road Closures

A few big projects are not going anywhere, though. Expect annoying lane closures on I-75 in Mackinac, Monroe, Oakland, and Saginaw counties, I-96 in Ionia and Livingston, U.S. 131 in Kalamazoo and Kent, I-94 in Berrien, I-475 in Genesee, and U.S. 127 and I-496 in Ingham. See, it's not going to be perfect.

If you are heading north, don't forget the Mackinac Bridge will be closed to traffic Monday morning from 6:30 until noon for the annual bridge walk.

So, who do you call? If you hit one of these animals, you’ll want to contact the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) or local law enforcement. If it’s an actual emergency, call 911; otherwise, just dial the non-emergency number. They’ll handle the situation and make sure everything's squared away. Just don’t forget to report it.
