Heavy Rain Just Wrecked More of Michigan’s Tunnel of Trees

If a scenic drive through Michigan’s famous Tunnel of Trees was on your list, you’ll want to rethink your plans.

According to MLive, Heavy rain and flash flooding slammed Northern Michigan on Monday, and now four more sections of M-119 are closed because parts of the road literally washed out.

If you remember, MDOT was already trying to repair damage from major flooding back in April, so this latest round of rain definitely didn’t do them any favors.

For people who’ve never done it, the Tunnel of Trees is one of Michigan’s most iconic drives. It’s an awesome 22-mile stretch along Lake Michigan with tight curves, incredible lake views, and, of course, a tunnel of trees.

Is Michigan’s Tunnel of Trees Closed Right Now?

Parts of it are, yes. Multiple sections of M-119 are currently closed after heavy rain caused major washouts along the scenic route.

Northern Michigan got absolutely dumped on, with some areas seeing up to 6 inches of rain in a short amount of time, which was more than enough to wash out parts of the road.

Some of the worst damage happened near well-known spots like Devil’s Elbow and Horseshoe Bend, where multiple washouts forced closures.

Some sections were already closed before this latest storm, and one stretch isn’t expected to reopen until summer 2027.

Businesses Along M-119 Say They’re Still Open for Visitors

The good news is businesses in places like Good Hart General Store are still open and still want visitors to come through.
