MLB to Delay Opening Day Until Mid-May
It's not the news baseball fans wanted to hear but I don't think it will come as a shock. Major League Baseball is pushing back opening day to sometime in mid-May at the earliest.
According to CBS Sports, commissioner Rob Manfred issued a statement saying the start of the regular season will be pushed back in accordance with a CDC recommendation to restrict events of more than 50 people for the next eight weeks.
Even though this throws a wrench in things, owners are still hopeful that the league will somehow be able to play a full 162-game season.
It's been a long time since anything like this has happened. As a matter of fact, it was back in 1995 when the season was shortened from 162 games to 144 following a 7 1/2-month players’ strike. Opening day was pushed back from April 2 to April 26.
Opening Day was supposed to happen on March 26th with all 30 teams scheduled to play.
