The abuse of prescription painkillers is becoming a real problem in Michigan, according to a new report.

The Center for Healthcare Research & Transformation published their findings last week, which “shows that uncoordinated opioid prescriptions put hundreds of privately insured patients in Michigan at increased risk for accidental overdose and death in 2013.”

In this case, the term “uncoordinated” refers to a person who gets prescriptions from several physicians.

The report finds hundreds of insured Michiganders are getting their hands of dangerous pain pills in this manner, which is contributing to a higher mortality rate than over a decade ago.

There were 519 accidental overdose deaths associated with prescription painkillers in 2013 compared to 81 back in 1999. This cause of death contributed to 43 percent of the total deaths stemming from opioids in 2013.
