A Saginaw police sergeant is under investigation for retail fraud at a Walmart in Midland, Michgian.

Get this, Ian Wenger is accused of using a police station label maker to create bogus barcodes. However, Wenger claims he was not on the clock at the Saginaw Police Department when using the label maker. I am not sure that makes much of a difference.

Wenger would use the fake barcodes to purchase items in self-checkout lanes at the Midland Walmart at a lower price. According to ABC 12, the scam occurred from November 2024 through the middle of January 2025.

Kiosk Marketplace reported last year that a handful of retailers planned to remove or limit the amount of self-checkout lanes at stores due to theft. Costco, Target, Dollar General, and Walmart were included in that announcement.

It will be interesting to see if self-checkouts will eventually be non-existent (video below). I don't mind using them, but I know plenty of people who don't.

As for Sergeant Wenger, he has been charged with second-degree retail fraud and has been suspended without pay from the Saginaw Police Department.

This incident remains under investigation. Check out the video below for a peek at court records regarding the case.
