If you were out on Lake St. Clair this past weekend, you might’ve seen or at least heard about the scary boat explosion at Emerald City Harbor in St. Clair Shores. It was a wild and heartbreaking scene, to say the least.

Around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 6), a boat had just finished fueling at the gas dock and was heading out onto the water when it suddenly exploded. The video shows the boat carrying two people and their dog going up in flames just seconds after refueling.

WDIV reports the explosion was powerful enough to throw both passengers into the water. Luckily, they only suffered minor injuries, but sadly, the dog didn’t make it. Crews rushed the pup to an emergency vet hospital, but it later died from its injuries. Watching the video (below), it almost looks like the dog was right in the middle of the blast. The fact that the two people survived is nothing short of amazing.

When first responders arrived, the boat was already almost completely underwater with pieces of debris scattered across the surface. The dock itself took damage, and environmental crews were called in to deal with the fuel and oil contamination left behind in the water.

Authorities say the cause of the explosion is still under investigation, but at this point, they don’t suspect foul play.

It’s a crazy and heartbreaking reminder of just how quickly things can go wrong.
