A Fenton man is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after exchanging gunfire with a Houghton Lake State Trooper during a traffic stop. Before taking his life, he shot and wounded the trooper.

According to ABC12, the trooper was treated for non-life-threatening gunshot injuries and has since been released from the hospital. The gunman has been identified as 32-year-old Douglas Robert Sawyer. Apparently, this guy had 3 warrants out for his arrest including a Parole Absconder warrant resulting from his failure to comply with parole after a prison sentence for Home Invasion. The second was a felony warrant for Criminal Sexual Assault 4th Degree out of the Michigan State Police Paw Paw Post and the third was a civil warrant for child neglect.

It sounds like this guy knew he was going to jail if the officer realized there were warrants out for his arrest so rather than going to jail, he'd put up a fight.
