Have you or someone you know ever had a great idea for an invention but had no clue how to make a prototype? Maybe you have that one uncle who is always in the garage tinkering, constructing and fixing things. Perhaps you've heard all about 3D printing, laser etching, and computer aided design and want to see what all the fuss is about. The FABLAB is a place in Flint, that's open to the public, where you can take your ideas "from your mind to your hands"!

The FABLAB at Mott Community College is housed in the Regional Tech Center building, right off of Robert T. Longway Blvd in Flint. It may be on campus at a school, but it is open to any and everyone, not just students. It is a great place to take youngsters to learn about a variety of things (including robotics) or for the retired GM worker that has been fabricating for decades and has a head full of great ideas. One story in particular that I love about The FABLAB is the mom whose daughter was a terrible teether so she designed a new teething ring to get to the baby's back teeth and is now selling her product worldwide.

There are people on hand to help with all of the stuff that you might not have a clue about like computer designing and laser etching. Maybe you need to cut wood or aluminum and, like me, can't even cut a straight line in a sheet of paper! There is always staff on hand available to walk you through what you need.

Another bonus of The FABLAB is that inventors can make 3D prototypes of their ideas before sending it to be manufactured to avoid making costly mistakes and wasting time and material. Say you're not sure about how to manufacture your idea or how to turn it into a business...The FABLAB can also point you in the right direction for help in whichever area you may need it in.

Now, you may be thinking "what if they steal my idea?". Well, that would defeat the whole purpose of their organization! The goal of The FABLAB is to help local people with their ideas and getting them to market. That IS their business - helping other people with what they need to do business. Your ideas are safe and secure at "The Lab".

Even if you're not an inventor, and just want to replace a lid to your favorite crock pot, The FABLAB can help. I had a chance to tour and get to know the staff there and I'm telling you, it is a remarkable place that I feel the public needs to know more about. In a city that was largely based on manufacturing, I can only IMAGINE the amount of amazing ideas that are floating around in the minds of my lovely neighbors here in Genesee County, and the surrounding areas. Many Flint business such as The Flint Farmers' Market and Tenacity Brewing have utilized the lab for various reasons.
