This Huge Observation Tower Overlooks Michigan’s Oldest City
Located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, this massive tower overlooks the state's oldest city, Sault Ste. Marie.
Sault Ste. Marie was settled as early as 1668. Not only is it the oldest city in Michigan, it's also among the oldest cities in the United States.
Standing 210 feet above Sault Ste. Marie and the Soo Locks, the Tower of History is a very unique looking observation platform for visitors to get an amazing view and photos of the world’s busiest inland shipping channel.

You can get a 360-degree view of the entire Sault area from the Sault Locks and the St. Mary’s River. While standing on the Tower of History, you can also get a glimpse across the waterway into Canada.
I checked out the Tower of History last year when visiting Sault Ste. Marie for the first time. The view really is spectacular. I found it funny that my fiancee is from Sault Ste. Marie and it was her first visit to the tower as well. I made her feel like a total tourist that day.
During the 4th of July, you can even buy tickets to view fireworks from the observation deck.
It's called the Tower of History for a reason. According to Sault Historic Site, the Tower of History was built in 1968 by the Catholic Church as the Shrine of the Missionaries.
Today, you'll find a small museum in the lower and upper levels of the tower that features early Missionaries along with local and Native American history. There's also a video presentation that features descriptions of the surrounding area as well as its own exhibit space.
The Tower of History is definitely worth checking out on your next visit to Sault Ste. Marie.
