What Changes Were Made at Twin Lakes State Park?

Twin Lakes State Park sits about 26 miles from Houghton along the west shore of Lake Roland. It’s a popular spot for camping, fishing, boating, and, of course, hitting the ORV trails.

So, what changed while the park was closed?

Probably the biggest thing campers will notice is the brand-new bathroom building, which replaces the one that had been there since the 1970s. Yeah, I’d say that upgrade was probably overdue.

According to MLive, the $2.5 million project also included work on the wastewater system, sanitation station, parking lots, and the park entrance.

They also gave the day-use beach area some attention, including upgrades to the open-air and enclosed pavilions. Those areas now include picnic tables, charcoal grills, and electrical service.

So yeah, it’s a pretty solid upgrade that campers are definitely going to notice.

Michigan Park Offers Direct Access to ORV Trails

One thing that makes Twin Lakes really cool is that ORVs are allowed to drive in and out of the park, giving riders direct access to nearby trails.

It also makes a pretty solid base camp if you’re checking out the Porcupine Mountains, Copper Country, or some of the old copper mines around the Keweenaw Peninsula.

The campground will remain open through October 15, so you've still got some time to squeeze in a trip this year.

Of course, one thing to keep in mind: it’s a serious hike if you’re traveling there from, say, Genesee County. You’re looking at around a 7- to 8-hour drive to get there.
