Weird Vertical Lights in the Sky Were freaking Out Michiganders Earlier This Year

Michiganders were freaking out earlier this year when they looked to the night sky and saw some really bizarre vertical lights that looked like something out of a science fiction movie.

As we look back at popular stories from 2022, take a look at this one. While it was an easy explanation, most people had no idea what it was at first.

If you were one of many people that witnessed these strange lights, I'm sorry to report, it wasn't an alien invasion. What you were looking at were light pillars.

What are Light Pillars?

A light pillar is an atmospheric optical phenomenon in which a vertical beam of light appears to extend above and/or below a light source. The US National Weather Service in Gaylord described it is as a shaft of light extending vertically above the light source. They develop as a result of ice crystals slowly falling through the air, reflecting the light source off of them.

Some People on Michigan Sky Warn were going nuts thinking they were beams of light coming out the bottom of a UFO or something. However, I assumed they were joking, at least I hope so.

One guy on social media thought it was nothing more than lights from a business sign.

Seen similar about 4am around Lapeer rd & Dutton. they were shades of green. I wrote it off to business sign lighting. Whatever it was, pretty cool.

Someone else on the page was aware of light pillars but didn't believe that's what they were looking at.

Don’t these look too uniform in shape ,spacing, and size to be light pillars?

I’m not educated in these matters at all but the uniformity just doesn’t look like a natural occurring phenomenon.

Honestly, I had never heard of light pillars before seeing the photos earlier today. Had I seen them, I would have thought it was aliens too. Beam me up, Scotty!
