The Sandy Hook Elementary shooting that took the lives of 20 children happened two years ago today. Despite the fact that Obama never tried to use this tragedy to "take our guns," people still think it was a hoax.

A couple years ago, I was amazed that the authenticity of this horribly tragedy was even up for debate. However, this is America -- where we debate the existence of things that every other country in the world have accepted as fact. You know, scientifically proven things like global warming. We even had to re-brand it as "climate change" because people were saying (and please read this in the voice of the dumbest person you can think of) "If global warming is real, how come it got so cold this winter?"

The real issue here is that whenever there guns are involved in taking another life, people are going to call buls--- out of fear. After nearly every mass shooting that happened over the past couple of years, people would claim that "Obama is going to take our guns." Here we are in the twilight of his Presidency and no such "gun grab" has ever taken place, nor is there one on the horizon. That doesn't exactly give credence to those arguments.

A couple of months ago, claims that the Sandy Hook massacre was a hoax were reignited by the 2012 FBI crime report for Newton, Connecticut, which had 0 in the murder column. Snopes.com, the most popular site for discrediting or proving internet stories, noted that the deaths were logged under the state police's category because of jurisdictional reporting practices -- mostly state police worked the scene -- not because it didn't happen.

The most popular piece of "evidence" the conspiracy theorists point to is a half-hour video explaining all of the things about the shooting and its coverage that don't add up -- click here if you want to see that video. Most of the video is speculative at best... and that's before you start trying to punch holes in its conveniently one-sided view of things. Let's just say if there were a trial on whether or not it was a hoax, no jury in America would say it was a hoax after all of the evidence was presented (yes, I am aware that public opinion of juries isn't very high right now). Either way, the video below debunks most of the theories in these hoax videos and only takes about half the time to do so.

I love this country. I love that we are free to express ourselves without fear of persecution by our government (for the most part). I also hate that we live in a place where tragedies like this and proven scientific facts are up for debate. We have the potential to do great things in this world, but we're never going to get there if we can't get out of our own way.

Our thoughts are with those who lost everything on December 14, 2012.
