Metallica’s eight-concert run in Mexico City has begun at the Palacia de los Deportes. A video of the ‘best effects’ during the opening show on Saturday, July 28 is now available (watch below). The nine minute clip includes shots of various pyro and lighting effects, including what appeared to be stagehands catching on fire.

During ‘Enter Sandman,’ a flare malfunctioned, and two stagehands examining it were engulfed in flames.  The show was stopped while the fire was extinguished and the crew members were taken off the stage on stretchers. The horrifying event apparently was all a stunt, as a spokesman for the promoter described it as “part of the show.”

The show on Metallica’s gigantic new 150 by 40-foot stage brought back components from throughout their career and introduced some new elements as well.

Other effects and props seen in the video included the construction and collapse of the giant Doris statue during ‘And Justice for All,’ lighted crosses coming up from the stage during ‘Master of Puppets,’ coffins and pyro for ‘Battery,’ and the giant ‘Metal Up Your Ass’ toilet making an appearance at the end of the show.

After wrapping up their run in Mexico City, Metallica return to the Bay Area for the Outside Lands festival in San Francisco on Aug. 11, followed by four dates in Canada.  The Vancouver shows will be filmed for Metallica’s upcoming 3D movie.
