With the weather getting nicer, it is time to hit the shooting range.

Spring has sprung and the weather is getting better every day. Now is the perfect time to start planning trips to the range to practice your skills. After all, a firearm is pretty dangerous to you and those around you if you don't know how to use it properly.

For you long-time gun owners, you are no strangers to these places. I'm sure many of you have been to most of these and have your opinions on them, to pass along the knowledge to the newer gun owners in the comment section.

Below you'll find a list of 11 public shooting ranges in Genesee and Lapeer Counties. If you don't live near any of these ranges, click here to see all of the ranges in Michigan courtesy of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

We all know that more people are taking steps to protect themselves and purchasing firearms. I am personally in that group. I purchased my first firearm a few years ago when the whole world looked like it was going to hell. My first purchase was for protection, but it quickly turned into a hobby. I really enjoy going to the range with friends and it has made me a lot more confident as a gun owner.

Full disclosure, the reason I never owned a gun was that I was terrified of them. I always wanted to get over the fear and I had to find the right time and people to do it. If you are in that boat, the best thing you can do is find someone you trust that owns firearms and ask as many questions as possible. I haven't met a single responsible gun owner that won't take time out to teach you or give you advice. They want you to be safe and confident with a firearm as much as you do.
