I am a pop culture junkie. I've been putting in the man-hours so you don't have to sort through a bunch of crap to find out what kind of badassery you have coming at you next year. I struggled to make a list of 5 movies worth seeing next year, but adding the prequel to sci-fi horror classic "The Thing" was a no-brainer.

#5. The Thing: The 1982 John Carpenter take on "The Thing" is an incredible movie because of three things (with an honorable mention going to Mr. Diabeetus himself, Wilford Brimley):

  1. Kurt Russell as MacReady- This was back when he only played badasses like Snake Plissken and Jack Burton, and was great at it.
  2. John Carpenter's direction
  3. Awesome creature effects (which still look great by today's standards) courtesy of Rob Bottin.

Since the new movie will feature none of these elements it will be a gamble when you throw your eight bucks on the counter. I'm hoping it pays off. The cast has a few names I recognize (but none you probably do) and the story is supposed to cover the events that conspired immediately prior to those in the first film. The setting will once again be an Antarctica research facility and I think we'll see where those crazy Norwegian dudes at the beginning of the 1982 flick came from. Unfortunately the movie was recently pushed back from April to October. I tried to dig up the trailer and apparently it got pulled from the internet when the release date was pushed. Instead check out this awesome scene from the original.
