Burton Residents Warned About Fake Notices Telling Them to Shut Off Power
If you live in Burton and find a notice telling you to shut off the power to your home, don’t start flipping switches in your circuit box. The city says the notice is completely fake.
According to Mid Michigan NOW, the fake flier has been showing up in neighborhoods around Burton and appears to be from the city’s Department of Public Works.
The notice claims there is an electrical hazard and tells residents to shut off every switch inside their circuit box. That alone should be a giant red flag. Still, when something looks like it came directly from the city, it would definitely get your attention.
Burton Says There Is No Electrical Hazard
The City of Burton says there is no known electrical hazard affecting the city’s power grid.
There are also no electrical inspections scheduled by the city or the Department of Public Works. Neither department is asking anyone to shut off the power to their home.
In other words, leave your power on and completely ignore the instructions on the flier.
What Burton Residents Should Do With the Fake Notice
It’s still unclear who is leaving these notices around Burton or what they’re trying to accomplish. That’s probably the strangest and most concerning part of this whole thing.
Anyone who receives one should ignore it and let their neighbors know what’s going on, especially older residents who might be more likely to believe something that appears official.
