Central Michigan University is apologizing after mistakenly informing students that they were receiving full-ride scholarships to the school.

The university says there was an error in its messaging technology system and students were erroneously informed that they were receiving the prestigious Centralis Scholarship.

It appears that 58 would-be students received the message.

How Did the Mistake Happen?

CMU claims that technology staff members were testing the system over the weekend and inadvertently posted a message about would-be students getting full-ride scholarships. Chaos followed when that message was seen by students who were logged into the system at the time.

Students received a message the following day informing them of the error.

CMU Tries to Make it Right With Students

Since the debacle, Central Michigan University has chosen to award students who received the erroneous message "an amount equal to a full-time scholarship."

A CMU representative tells Grand Rapids TV station WZZM that the amount being given to each of the students is the same as the amount awarded for the Centralis Scholarship but it does not include room and board.

"We deeply regret the disappointment and frustration caused by the test message error in the student portal," the statement reads. "To make it right, we will be reaching out to each of the 58 students who saw the congratulatory message regarding the Centralis Scholarship and offering to increase their award amount to the equivalent of a full-tuition scholarship."
