Chris Cornell’s Widow Says They ‘Still Have Several Unanswered Questions’ Surrounding Singer’s Death
As tributes continue to pour in following the death of Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, his family is still looking for answers. After Cornell's recent passing, his widow Vicky issued a statement that she and the family's attorney believe the prescription drug Ativan could have contributed to Cornell's death.
Another statement was issued from Vicky Cornell and attorney Kirk Pasich today (June 1) and it says that the Detroit police department's investigation into the matter is still open. Pasich says that "the family remains mystified that the medical examiner announced a cause of death when the full autopsy report has not been completed."
He says the family has not seen any of the police of toxicology reports. Vicky Cornell adds that they "still have several unanswered questions about what led to his death. We believe the toxicology report will answer these questions." You can read the complete statement below.
The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Cornell’s death as “suicide by hanging." A private memorial service was held last week in Los Angeles that was attended by musicians such as Dave Grohl, James Hetfield, Courtney Love and Perry Farrell along with actors including Brad Pitt, Josh Brolin and James Franco.
Cornell's brother Peter posted a statement yesterday, which said in part, "The power and anger and passion of my brother’s music was always genuine, original and legitimate. He was the powerful, sensitive, fragile, angry, mystical creature that will exist forever in his body of work. And he did it for ALL of us. Giving it away. Leaving all on the stage or in the recordings that will keep him immortal."
Statement from Cornell Family Attorney Kirk Pasich and Vicky Cornell
Kirk Pasich, attorney for the family of the late Chris Cornell, today said that the City of Detroit Law Department denied a request his firm made under the Freedom of Information Act for reports relating to Chris Cornell’s death, stating: "Based on information provided by personnel from the City of Detroit Police Department (DPD) Homicide Section, it is our understanding that this matter is an open investigation. As such they believe that the release of any information at this time, including the records identified in your request, would compromise and/or interfere with their investigation."
Mr. Pasich confirmed the family has not yet seen any of the police or toxicology reports, noting that the family remains mystified that the medical examiner announced a cause of death when the full autopsy report has not been completed.
Given the information above, Mr. Pasich said that the family hopes there will be an end to speculation about the cause of Mr. Cornell’s death while the family awaits the definitive and complete reports. Vicky Cornell, the late star’s widow, said, “We are grateful for the outpouring of support as we mourn Chris’ passing, but we still have several unanswered questions about what led to his death. We believe the toxicology report will answer these questions.”
