Whether you're heading to or leaving the Upper Peninsula, get ready for some delays this summer as construction got underway this week on I-75 near the Mackinac Bridge.

The Michigan Department of Transportation started a major three-year construction project on Monday. The purpose of this project is to resurface I-75 and rebuild U.S. 23 through Mackinaw City. You know what that means? Slow moving traffic in both directions just south of the Mackinac Bridge.

This lengthy project will be happening during the busiest time of year, when tourists are wanting to cross the bridge to enjoy summer in Michigan's Upper Peninsula.

You'll more than likely have to deal with lane closures, traffic shifts, and detours all summer long.

According to ABC 12, the $12.3 million project this year will focus on the I-75 corridor between the bridge approach and Old M-108 or Nicolet Street. Contractors will resurface the freeway in both directions while rebuilding ramps at Nicolet and Jamet streets.

To make matters worse, the southbound U.S. 23 bridge over I-75 will be completely replaced this year as well. Add that to multiple other projects planned in the same area through 2024 and you have a real mess on your hands.

If you're planning on heading to the Upper Peninsula this summer, plan accordingly. Try not to travel during peak times if you can. It's hard to predict when people will be traveling around holiday weekends so give yourself plenty of extra time.

I can't wait to get to the U.P. this summer.
