According to Mid-Michigan Now, scammers are using fake Consumers Energy phone numbers and telling people they owe money right away. The kicker is that they push you to pay with prepaid debit or gift cards. Obviously, this is a big red flag, but so many people still fall for it.

Consumers Energy says they will never demand payment like that, so if you get one of these calls, just hang up. If you already sent money, call Consumers Energy right away at 800-477-5050 so they can take down the details. If you did not send money, it is worth filing a police report with your local department.
