Corey Taylor: Imagine Dragons Are the New Nickelback
In recent years, a handful of rock and metal artists have come to defend Nickelback, or, at least, the band's members, shielding them from some of the Internet's unrelenting vitriol. In turn, there's been a shift that has funneled that hatred directly toward Imagine Dragons and Corey Taylor has taken delight in it.
In a lighthearted conversation with Sex Pistols legend Steve Jones for his "Jonesy's Jukebox" radio program (video below), Taylor and Jason Christopher (bass player in Taylor's solo band) joked about a number of things, like burly Slipknot fans drunkenly singing U2 at Taylor's shows. The singer quipped each one of those fans have to surrender one Slayer record.
Jones then asked if they would be performing Nickelback covers, which Taylor laughed off. Jones mentioned that Nickelback are the "scapegoat" of rock 'n' roll and Taylor agreed, adding, "However, they are passing the baton to Imagine Dragons right now and I love it."
"They're awful — so that's cool," the singer bemoaned. Always self-aware, the Las Vegas resident continued, with a laugh, "And they're from Vegas, so I'm gonna go home to protests. Can't show my face in this town now. Yeah, people are slowly coming back to appreciate Nickelback and then just turning their irksome ire towards Imagine Dragons."
"They're like the hipster Nickelback," Christopher chimed in.
It was as if Taylor knew his words were headlines in the making, commenting, "Be prepared for this to turn into 20 clickbait news stories though, by the way."
After Imagine Dragons played the College Football Playoff National Championship, Slayer and Exodus guitarist Gary Holt shredded their performance, calling the group the "shittiest band on Earth" and a lot more.
