Detroit Children’s Museum Set to Reopen After 5-Year Hiatus
The Detroit Children’s Museum is making a comeback after being closed since 2020.
According to WXYZ, the museum will reopen at its original home on 2nd Avenue thanks to more than $800,000 in grant money from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity. The Detroit Public Schools Community District Foundation made the announcement this week.
If you grew up in Michigan, chances are you or someone you know ended up on a school bus headed to the Detroit Children’s Museum. For decades, it was one of those go-to field trip spots for teachers across the state, including plenty from right here in Genesee County.
While it’s been part of countless childhood memories, the museum itself went through some tough times after the district’s financial crisis in 2009. For years, it was only partly open, and then the pandemic came along and shut it down completely.
Kerrie Mitchell Campbell-Mabins, President and CEO of the DPSCD Foundation:
This is a historic moment for Detroit. The Children’s Museum has shaped generations of learners, and reopening its doors means reigniting that spark for thousands more.
Detroit Public Schools students will get first dibs with a special preview this October and November. After that, the plan is to open it back up to the public in December 2025.
After five years, the Detroit Children’s Museum is finally coming back.
