Detroit Zoo Welcomes Historic Baby Gorilla in Nearly 100-Year History

The Detroit Zoo just welcomed a baby gorilla, and while that might sound like something that happens all the time, it doesn't. This is actually a pretty historic moment. According to MLive, the female infant was born late Sunday night to first-time mom Tulivu, making her just the second gorilla ever born at the Detroit Zoo in its nearly 100-year history.

Zoo officials say both mom and baby are doing well, and so is dad, Mshindi. The zoo's first gorilla birth happened in August 2024 when Motema was born, which means the newest arrival is Motema's half-sister.
