Isle Royale Campground Closed After Wolves Break Into Shelter

I love camping, but this story is exactly why you'll never catch me camping on a remote island in the middle of Lake Superior.

A campground on Michigan's remote Isle Royale has been shut down after one or more wolves ripped through the screen of a camping shelter looking for food.

According to MLive, the wolves got inside the shelter, chewed on a cooler that wasn't stored properly, and even dragged campers' clothing outside. Thankfully, nobody was inside at the time, and no one was hurt.

Why Michigan's Isle Royale Campground Was Closed

This actually isn't the first problem they've had at Duncan Narrows Campground. Earlier this month, the area was temporarily closed after wolves started getting a little too comfortable around campers. Park staff tried hazing the animals with things like air horns, paintball guns, and motion-activated noise makers, but it apparently wasn't enough.

The campground is now expected to stay closed for the rest of July, and it could remain closed even longer if the wolves continue showing up.

Why Wolves Keep Returning to Isle Royale Campgrounds

Park officials believe campers leaving food and other scented items out is what's bringing the wolves back. Once they figure out people are an easy source of food, it's tough to get them to change their ways.

I love camping, but this? Hard pass. I have zero interest in being stranded on a remote island in the middle of Lake Superior, surrounded by thick woods, knowing there are wild wolves wandering around the campground. That's going to be a no from me. I'll stick to campgrounds where my biggest concern is whether the campground Wi-Fi is good enough to stream TV from the comfort of my RV.
