Michigan Man Spotted Kayaking Lake Superior in Freezing Temps
People who live in Michigan's Upper Peninsula are a different breed. They're built for crazy snow, freezing temps, and a whole lot of "hold my pasty and watch this."
It's no secret that the Upper Peninsula and the rest of Michigan are in a deep freeze right now. If we're lucky, temperatures will top out in the teens.
Over the weekend, while temps were in the teens, a man was spotted kayaking on Lake Superior—an activity that is not recommended unless you’ve got nerves of steel and a serious love for the cold. Not to mention, it’s insanely dangerous.
If proof is what you need, we got it thanks to Shannon Kivi (906 Images), a Marquette-based photographer.
The man was braving not only the freezing cold air but also Lake Superior, where the water is only in the 30s. Again, Yoopers, they’re a different breed.
According to a Facebook post from Kivi and 906 Images, it was also extremely windy, making things feel even colder.
In the teens with 20-30 mph winds with higher gusts....of course it's perfect for Kayaking on Lake Superior!
I don't know who this guy is, but he is one brave soul.
This brave kayaker reminds me of Dan Schetter, aka Surfer Dan, a local who surfs Lake Superior in the most extreme winter conditions. Surfer Dan went viral years ago when people found out about his winter surf sessions, battling icy waves and freezing temps like it was just another day at the beach.
It’s hard to believe there are people willing to subject themselves to harsh conditions like this just for the thrill of it. I find it difficult simply taking out the trash when it’s too cold out—so I can’t even imagine paddling across Lake Superior in freezing temps.
