If your destination this morning is to head to downtown Lapeer, you need to read this.

Police in Lapeer are urging drivers to stay away from downtown Lapeer. Reports came in this morning of a loud boom, which turned out to be some sort of explosion. According to witnesses and police, several manhole covers were blown out of the street. It is being said that gas made its way into the sewer line causing the explosion.

Firefighters are saying to avoid the area as a precaution and for safety reasons. The main areas of concern are Genesee Street to Oregon Street and Main Street to Nepessing Street.

According to the Lapeer County Sheriff's Office Facebook page, it is unknown as to how long the barricades that have been put up will stay. As for now, the entire downtown area is closed to traffic. You can follow them for updates here.
