It’s Official: El Cozumel Mexican Grill is Open in Davison
It’s official, El Cozumel Mexican Grill is finally open in Davison. This has been a long time coming, as we first told you about the restaurant opening back in November 2023.
The longtime Genesee County favorite for tacos (their chorizo tacos are the bomb), burritos, and giant margaritas officially opened Monday, November 10, inside the former Big Boy building on Lapeer Road. They actually did a soft opening on Saturday, but Monday was the first day they opened to the public.
I actually swung by around 3:30 p.m. on Monday, and the parking lot was already jam-packed. Clearly, everyone in Davison was ready for this one. I think that was pretty obvious by the countless people on Facebook asking when it was going to open.
I feel like everybody’s been to their location inside Courtland Center, which has been there since 2008. If you have, then you already know what to expect. Same awesome owners, same recipes, and that same massive menu loaded with fajitas, enchiladas, tamales, and their spicy Pollo a la Diabla.

According to MLive, owners Saul “Lalo” Rodriguez and Enrique Melendez completely transformed the old Big Boy space into a warm, familiar dining spot. The Davison restaurant will have around 18 to 20 employees and will stay open late on Fridays and Saturdays, sometimes until 11 p.m., depending on how busy it gets.
With two locations now in Burton and Davison, El Cozumel has definitely made its mark in Genesee County. And you have to admit, it looks so much better than the old Big Boy that sat there for all those years.
As far as we know, the owners still plan to open another location in Lapeer as well.
