This Fast and Icy Outdoor Experience Makes a Great MI Day Trip
Add some excitement to your cold and boring winter with this quick day trip.
For many Michiganders, the winter time can feel like a long, cold, depressing, and miserable time. Hitting the slopes or jumping on a snowmobile can be pricy as well. However, if you need a little bit of excitement but don't want to commit to buying all that pricy equipment, take a trip to Muskegon.
What's so exciting in Muskegon? The Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park. This park is home to an 850-foot-long natural ice luge track that you can rip down on a sled. This luge track is one of only four ice luge tracks in the United States. It is also the only kunstbahn track (which is German for artificial track) that is made from ice and not refrigerated.
If you're a beginner and just want to give it a shot, Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park has a simple 2.5-hour session for you to do just that. During that time, the staff will give you a lesson on how to ride, steer, and stop your sled. They then fit you with a sled and protective equipment and you are off to the races. When the session is over you'll finish the time with an Olympic-style medals ceremony.
The Learn to Luge pricing is very reasonable as well. It's only $35 on Wednesday and Thursday nights, $65 on weekends, and $75 on holidays. Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park also offers cross-country skiing, acres of outdoor ice skating, snowshoeing, and more.
Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park is located at 462 Scenic Drive in Muskegon. The park is around two hours away from Flint, two and a half hours from Traverse City, and about three hours from Detroit.
