We see news articles pop up here and there about the West Nile Virus, about when it’s first detected in the state, and the cases that follow. But it’s not until there’s a death tied to it that we really pay attention and take it seriously.

That tragic moment has come for Michigan in 2025. According to ABC 12, Kent County officials confirmed the state’s first human death from West Nile Virus this year. Mosquitoes carrying the virus have been trapped within 3,000 feet of where the person lived, though the health department did not release their exact location.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of this individual. This tragic outcome is a reminder that mosquitoes in our area are active and capable of spreading serious illness. Prevention remains our best protection.

Most people who get infected don’t even realize it. About one in five will get flu-like symptoms, and roughly one in 150 can get seriously sick, sometimes affecting the nervous system, and in rare cases, like the recent death in Kent County, it can be fatal.

There’s no vaccine, so your best bet is to avoid bites. I know, easier said than done. Just make sure you slap on some repellent, cover up with long sleeves and pants when mosquitoes are out. Also, get rid of any standing water around your house so they don’t have a place to breed.

This whole situation is a brutal reminder that even a tiny mosquito can cause big problems.
