Freeman Elementary is the only school in the district operating with a balanced calendar year, but that's about to change in 2019.

According to ABC12, in the fall of 2019 Flint Community Schools will be the first urban district of its size to adopt the balanced calendar district-wide.

So basically, kids will go to school like normal and the number of days students are in class remain the same but they start earlier and end later than normal. Students will kick off the school year on August 6th and then wrap up the school year on June 16th. They'll be in class for roughly 45 days straight (not on the weekends of course) before getting a 10-day break.

Superintendent Derrick Lopez says: “The decision to implement a balanced calendar districtwide comes in light of the positive outcomes we have seen with students both within our district at Freeman Elementary School and throughout the nation at schools that operate under this schedule. It is our priority to put students in a position to be successful, and we believe a balanced calendar will increase academic achievement throughout our district.”

I'm not sure how kids feel about the change but I think it's definitely a step in the right direction. Hopefully, Grand Blanc schools (where my son attends) will adopt the balanced calendar year in the future.
