Flushing Cancels Harvest Fest Amid COVID-19 Restrictions

Summer hasn't even taken her final bow and we are starting to see a glimpse of what fall has in store for us in the way of cancellations.

The Flushing Area Chamber of Commerce announced Thursday that they would be canceling this years Harvest Fest.  The annual event was scheduled for September 26th and is a favorite for each year for the community.

In a statement on their Facebook page, the Flushing Chamber Board of Directors state the decision stems from circumstances surrounding COVID-19 and the current Executive Orders made by Governor Whitmer. The statement goes on to say that the group has been gathering information and discussing moving forward with the event for the past few weeks.

The Board of Directors notes that due to the restrictions on the the amount of people that can gather outside being limited to just 100 people, there is no way to move forward  with the event knowing that it traditionally draws a much larger crowd. They also note that it would be difficult to secure enough volunteers to monitor all social distancing and mask guidelines.

The committee does mention that they are looking for new community actives for the fall that involve their local businesses as well as the community.

Fall in Michigan is still very much up in the air when it comes to our traditional activities and fun. Still uncertain is Friday night football for the high schools and even some collegiate level fall sports have already been postponed or canceled. Right now the Detroit Lions aren't ruling out reduced capacity at their games.

St. John Applefest in Fenton also decided to cancel their usual event this year and look to other forms of fundraising events for the community such as a golf outing. Time will only tell if apple orchards, Halloween trails, wine tasting tours, and other fall favorites continue on with their events.
