Ford is officially closing the book on its iconic Glass House in Dearborn, and yes, the building is going to be demolished.

Since 1956, the massive glass-sided tower at 1 American Road has been home to Ford’s world headquarters. For nearly 70 years, that 12-story building held thousands of employees, endless meetings, and some of the company’s biggest decisions.

According to Car and Driver, Ford will spend the next 18 months decommissioning the site before the wrecking crews move in.

So where’s everyone going? Just down the road. Ford has already started moving employees into its brand-new world headquarters on the Dearborn campus. The new spot may only be four floors tall, but it’s massive. This monster of a building is 2.1 million square feet, more than twice the size of the Glass House. It can hold double the employees.

By November, everyone will be settled into the new place. The full project won’t be totally done until 2027, but the move is basically already happening.

The Glass House, which stood tall for decades, is now set to come down while the company starts fresh just a few blocks away. You can see what the new building looks like in the video below.

What comes next for the old site is still up in the air, but Ford says it’ll work with the city of Dearborn to figure it out once the building is gone.
