Why Are Thousands Without Power in Genesee County?
I had no idea there was a major power outage affecting parts of Genesee County until a buddy texted me and asked if my generator was running today. I pulled up the Consumers Energy outage map and sure enough, my house was sitting right on the edge of the outage area.
If you're without power today, you're definitely not alone. More than 9,300 Consumers Energy customers in parts of Grand Blanc, Burton, Davison Township, and Atlas Township are currently affected by an outage that began around 11:20 a.m.
What's Causing the Outage?
UPDATED: A tree-cutting accident caused this major power outage.
Consumers Energy says the outage is the result of an equipment issue, although they haven't provided additional details about exactly what failed.
For thousands of people across Genesee County, it's been a frustrating day. And if you're still at work, there's a good chance you don't even know your power is out yet.

When Will Power Be Restored?
The good news is that most customers should have their power back sometime between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. The bad news? It just had to happen on a day when temperatures are expected to hit 85 degrees.
If your power is out, it may be worth checking the Consumers Energy outage map for the latest updates, as restoration estimates can change throughout the day.
We'll update this story if Consumers Energy releases more information about the equipment issue or if restoration times change.
