A Richfield Township woman will spend a year behind bars after allegedly using a dog's shock collar on her 12-year-old stepdaughter. She used a shock collar and a hammer to apparently punish the teen last year.

According to ABC12, Tiffany Alvarado was arrested last year and pleaded no contest to second-degree child abuse in Genesee County Circuit Court. She reached a deal with prosecutors last month.

Even though it's treated as so at sentencing, a no-contest plea is not an admission of guilt.

There were five other charges filed against Alvarado but they'll be dropped in exchange for her plea.

Last year ABC 12 reported that Alvarado was facing six felony counts for the abuse, including first-degree child abuse, torture and four counts of second-degree child abuse.

The step-daughter said that the woman would shock her every time she would act up and even threw a hammer at her and hit her in the back of the head with a soup ladle.

I know what you're wondering and I was too. Where in the hell was the father when all of this was going on? Apparently he was away from home a lot because of work.

Personally, I think the system failed with this one. A year's sentence compared to the trauma this girl will more than likely have to endure the rest of her life just doesn't seem fair.
