I never really need a reason to celebrate, but if you do - tomorrow, December 23rd, is Festivus. If you are not familiar, clearly you have not watched 'Seinfeld'.

Festivus is an alternative to the pressures and commercialism of the Christmas season. If you thought that the writers of 'Seinfeld' created the day, you are kind of right. The day originated by author Daniel O'Keefe. However, his son Dan O'Keefe, featured the day on an episode of Seinfeld while working on the show in 1997.

On the episode, George Costanza's father gets credit for creating Festivus (see clip above). I don't care if Festivus is made up or not. Think of all of the  Hallmark holiday's we have - at least this day is funny, and does not require buying a dozen roses. But it does require a pole.

Here are the items you need, and things you must do, to properly celebrate Festivus,

  • Aluminum Festivus Pole
  • Meatloaf Dinner
  • Airing of Grievances
  • Feats of Strength (wrestle one of your Festivus guests)
  • Call upon a Festivus Miracle

All of the above may require a bit more information. When it comes to your Festivus pole - do not decorate it. A stand alone plain old aluminum pole is all you need.

When serving your meatloaf for dinner, it must be served on a bed of lettuce. Feats of strength is the best thing on this list. As a host, you must challenge one of your guests to a match. However it is stated, that Festivus is not over until the host is pinned to the floor. Oh brother.

As far as airing your grievances goes, this is when at the beginning of the dinner, you let your guests know all of they ways they have disappointed you this year. That should go over well (not).

Finally calling up a Festivus miracle is when something good happened to you, that usually doesn't. Maybe you got a great parking spot at a busy store, or you were lucky enough to score the last pair of shoes in your size.

The only thing I would add to the list of things needed for Festivus, is a good bottle of booze. Enjoy, and Happy Festivus to you and yours.
