I-75 Will Be a Real Mess This Weekend in Oakland and Wayne Counties
If you have to travel along I-75 between I-696 and Square Lake this weekend, be prepared for some major slow downs. In Wayne and Oakland counties. I-75 will be totally shut down in both directions.
The plan is to totally shut down I-75 between I-696 and Square Lake in both directions. The closure is expected to start Friday night at 11 pm.
According to WXYZ, the closure is so crews can demolish a bridge and install a traffic shift, as both directions of traffic will be on one side of the highway.
Obviously, this is going to cause major headaches for those traveling on 75 but it's something that has to be done.
But wait, there's more. Workers will also close 12 Mile Road under I-75 starting at noon on Friday. The reason for this is to rebuild the road and create a diverging diamond interchange. I'll be honest, I had no idea what that was, so I looked it up. Apparently, a diverging diamond interchange allows free-flowing turns when entering and exiting an interstate, eliminating the left turn against oncoming traffic and limiting the number of traffic signal phases. So I guess I knew what it was, I just didn't know it had a name.
When Will I-75 Reopen?
If all goes according to plan, I-75 will reopen this Monday, February 28 at 5 am.
Where Will Drivers Be Detoured?
If you're traveling northbound on I-75, you're going to be detoured west onto I-696 to northbound Woodward Ave, then eastbound Square Lake Road back to northbound I-75.
If you're southbound on I-75, you'll have to hit westbound Square Lake Road to southbound Woodward Ave, then it's eastbound I-696 back to southbound I-75.
Like I said, it's going to be a real mess this weekend.
