You'll hear a lot about "Swing States" in an election year, but unfortunately (or fortunately?) that's not what this article is about.

Swinger culture, which became a mainstream conversation topic in the 60s and 70s in the U.S., is still in full... "Swing" across the country, and there are areas where it's even more prevalent  than others. In fact, two Upper Midwest States rank among the most popular!

Open-Love.org recently did some research across the country to ask about relationship statuses, and which states might be more prone to Open Relationships. What came back was actually a little surprising.

Michigan and Ohio ranked as two of the top 10 states for Swingers in the country.

Ohio came in at No. 10 with 459 people per 100,000 that swing. However, Michigan ramped it up a bit more, and came in at No. 4 on the list with 526 people per 100,000.

Surprisingly, Florida - who is notorious for its older population showing their sexual preferences by flying different-colored luffas on their antennas - only had 453 people per 100,000, barely putting them in the top 15.

But the top state for Swingers in the U.S. by far was Pennsylvania. The study showed 660 people per 100,000 showed interest in the Swinger culture.

What is "Swinging," and How Can You Identify People who Do It?

Swinging is a form of "Ethical Non-Monogamy" that involves swapping partners for sexual pleasure. The size of the culture in the country is relatively small - some studies put it at 5% of the population, while others say it's as low as 2%. Some experts say many married couples swing to actually strengthen their relationship, and decrease the risk of divorce. However, it requires an immense amount of communication with their partners.

The good thing is, you can USUALLY identify a swinger pretty easily, as there are signs you can look for. And these are no joke... very seriously, if you notice these items, you're likely in the presence of someone who Swings.

  • Upside Down Pineapple
  • Pink Flamingo, Garden Gnome, or Pampas Grass in the front lawn
  • Black Ring on the right hand
  • Large mirrors in the home
  • and a Hot Tub in the back yard

Obviously, aside from maybe the black ring, and the upside down pineapple, people who DON'T swing can still have those other items, but when combined, it can be a pretty surefire sign that you're with a Swinger.
