Jim Harbaugh has signed a contract extension to remain the Michigan head coach through 2025.

Michigan fans are split down the middle on the decision to keep Harbaugh after a disappointing first six seasons as Wolverine coach. Many fans were calling for an end to the Harbaugh era in Ann Arbor, but they did not get their wish. Harbaugh has managed a 49-22 record so far in Ann Arbor, but the team was 2-4 in the covid shortened 2020 season.

The new deal will pay him a base salary of $4 million in 2021 which will increase to over $4.4 million in 2025.

Harbaugh has had some success at Michigan, but has fallen far short of the usual benchmarks Michigan coaches are judged by. Harbaugh has failed to be Ohio State during his time as head coach, and has also not won a bowl game. When you add in some heartbreaking losses to Michigan State, you can bet that the fan base is not thrilled with the announcement.

It was expected that Harbaugh would bring Michigan back to the national spotlight, but things have not turned out that way. Michigan has struggled to find a team leading quarterback, and the defense has fallen off quite a bit. Apparently the powers that be feel like there is still a chance that Harbaugh can still fulfill the expectations.

Do you think Michigan made the right move by bringing Harbaugh back?
