Laketown Beach Adding New Stairs Down Lake Michigan Dunes
If you’ve ever been to Laketown Beach on Lake Michigan, you already know…those dunes are no joke. Seriously, brutal.
Right now, getting down to the water is easy enough, you just walk down a giant sand hill. Getting back up is a whole different story. Yeah…good luck with that.
That’s why Laketown Township is finally doing something about it.

New Stairs Could Make Beach Access Way Easier
According to MLive, the township is planning to build a brand new staircase down the dunes at Laketown Beach, just southwest of Holland. The old wooden stairs were removed last year because they weren’t safe anymore, and ever since, it’s been a workout just to leave the beach.
The new staircase would be about five feet wide and placed in a slightly different spot, but still take you from the top of the dune straight down to the shoreline.
In other words…no more crawling up the dunes on all fours like you’re fighting for your life.
What the New Laketown Beach Stairs Will Cost
Originally, this thing was expected to cost close to $200,000. Now, they’re looking at a much cheaper option around $117,000, which is a little easier to swallow.
Instead of waiting on state grants, the township is planning to just pay for it themselves so they can actually get it done.

When Will the New Laketown Beach Stairs Be Finished?
If everything goes as planned, the goal is to have the stairs ready by the end of the 2026 beach season.
