Davison Native Makes Golf History at Mott Community College

Mott Community College began their women's golf program just two years ago.

In the winter, the program added it's second member, Davison's Kamryn Johnston. Johnston has played golf since she was just five years old, and at the age of 24, is now doing it at the junior college (JUCO) Division 1 level.

Even without a typical fall season, she was able to become the first-ever female golfer to qualify for the NJCAA D1 Tournament from Mott Community College.

It's just such a great feeling. And I didn't even really realize like, Oh, my God, I just made history. And to put my name out there is awesome.  I want to do even more for Mott to get the girls golf program to continue growing and hopefully more girls will join and we'll have a team and we can make it as nationals

Johnston said.

Her inspiration to keep pursuing golf while starting college at a non-traditional, 'older' age, came from her mother that passed away about a year ago.

Like Kamryn, she was a Mott student-athlete, but her sport was volleyball.

She's kind of like my idol.

Johnston said.

She noted that it was mentally difficult to get through the golf season without her mom.

I just want to do my best and make her proud in the end

she said.

The MCC women's golf team will add two more players to the roster come next season, meaning that they can then compete as a team if they make it to the NCJAA. Johnston's goal for next season is to win at districts and finish in the top thirty at nationals. This season she finished in the top 55.

Johnston hopes to use her remaining two years of eligibility on another collegiate team following the conclusion of her two seasons at Mott.
