A bluegrass cover of Megadeth's "Symphony of Destruction"? Hey, odd things can happen when you "take a mortal man and put him in control," least of which being DD and the Butterlovers' rootsy take on the slow-burning thrash classic from Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine and company.

The unlikely version may not have you dancing around like a marionette. But one can certainly tell the folky rendition from musician Dan Davidson's metal-turned-country sextet took a lot of gumption. Listen to the bluegrass "Symphony of Destruction" toward the bottom of this post.

"An essential bluegrass classic," the video's description jests. "Dan Davidson's 'DD and the Butterlovers' have done it again with a bluegrass cover of Megadeth's 'Symphony of Destruction.'" A quick look at Davidson's YouTube page shows he's also recently offered bluegrass versions of more contemporary pop hits such as Billie Eilish's "Bad Guy" and Shawn Mendes' "If I Can't Have You."

But neither of those tunes carry the creative weight of "Symphony of Destruction," the heavy 1992 single from Megadeth's fifth album Countdown to Extinction. Although not adorned with banjo and fiddle, Megadeth themselves have infrequently performed an acoustic version of the song, as was captured on video in 2013. (Witness that version down after DD and the Butterlovers' clip.)

Not to mention the time Mustaine paired with the San Diego Symphony for a sublimely orchestral version of the tune. Other quirky cover versions have previously been mounted, like the one that was played with eggs.

Cover star Davidson, a serious artist in his own right, is a Canadian musician described as "Alberta's newest up and coming country sensation" on his website. His latest EP Juliet came out in February.
