9 Michigan Beaches Closed or Under Advisories Right Now

Beach closures and advisories are nothing unusual in Michigan during the summer. With more than 1,000 public beaches across the state, there are usually at least a few dealing with water quality issues at any given time.

A lot of the time, bacteria is the reason.

Heavy rain is usually one of the biggest problems. It can wash bacteria and other nasty stuff into the water from geese, pets, farms, and even septic systems. When that happens, E. coli levels can climb, and swimming may not be safe.

What’s the Difference Between a Michigan Beach Closure and an Advisory?

If a beach is closed, swimming is basically off limits until testing shows the bacteria levels have dropped back into a safe range. An advisory is a little different. The beach may still be open, but officials are warning that getting in the water might not be a great idea.

I mean, if there’s an advisory in place, there is zero chance you’re going to find me in that water. Nope.

The good news is these things can change pretty quickly. Once bacteria levels start coming back down, a beach can sometimes be cleared within a day or two.
