The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is hosting its winter Free Fishing Weekend this Saturday and Sunday. On February 14 and 15, anyone can fish in Michigan without a fishing license, even if you don't live in Michigan.

Do You Need a Fishing License During Michigan Free Fishing Weekend?

No. That’s why it’s such a big deal. A fishing license is not required during Free Fishing Weekend. That said, you still need to follow all existing fishing laws and species regulations. Free does not mean anything goes.

Are Michigan State Parks Free During Free Fishing Weekend?

Yes. A Recreation Passport will not be required to enter Michigan state parks or use boating access sites during the weekend.

Is Ice Safe to Fish on in Michigan Right Now?

Ice fishing is still happening across Michigan, but conditions are starting to change. With temps warming up and bouncing around, ice can weaken fast. Even if it looks solid, that does not mean it is, especially near moving water or pressure cracks.
