Michigan Gmail Users: Google Says Stop Using This Dangerous Login Method
Don't you hate it when someone tells you to do something a certain way because it's safer, but then turns around and tells you to stop because it's actually dangerous? You're like, wait a minute, what?
Well, that’s exactly what Google is telling Gmail users in Michigan right now. I'm not going to lie; in this particular situation, you should probably listen to what they want users to do. If not, you could end up losing access to your account and all your content.
According to Forbes, scammers are getting bold, sending out super convincing emails that look like they're straight from Google. I mean, they're so legit-looking they could fool even a well-trained eye. The goal? To trick you into giving up your info.
Google says it blocks about 99% of phishing emails, which is awesome, but that still means you're probably getting hammered with a bunch of those phishing email scams.
Make Changes to Your Google Account
What you need to do is tweak your settings. Set up a passkey and stop using text messages for two-factor authentication. Yep, this is exactly what I was talking about earlier—when they tell you to do one thing and then turn around and switch it up on you. Google is phasing out SMS two-factor anyway, but honestly, you should beat them to it and make the switch now.
Look, Google isn’t exactly thrilled about constantly rolling out security changes either, I’m sure it’s not cheap on their end. But at the end of the day, they’re just doing everything they can to keep those lowlife scammers from getting to you.
How to Set Up Your Passkey
Setting up a Passkey is super easy. Just head into your Google account settings, tap on Security, and you’ll see the option right there. It seriously takes like a minute.
While you’re already poking around in there, take a second to check your recent account activity. If anything looks off or you see a device that definitely is not yours, change your password right away.
And honestly, the best advice is this. Never give your login info to anyone claiming to be from Google. They are not going to email you asking for that kind of stuff. Ever.
