Urgent Warning for Michigan Residents: Unpaid Toll Text Scam Spreading
Here we go again with another scam targeting unsuspecting Michigan residents.
It's almost impossible to keep up with the latest scams targeting Michiganders. Just when you think you've seen it all, these lowlife scammers find a new way to trick people. This latest one is no different, and it's catching some people off guard.
Have you received a strange text recently claiming your vehicle has an unpaid toll bill? Well, you're not the only one. I got one today, and after looking into it, I found out it's a major text scam that officials are warning about.
The scam reads:
ExDriveMA Alert: Your vehicle has an unpaid tool bill. To avoid excessive late fees on your bill, please settle it promptly. thank you for your cooperation! Total amount $6.99
Then they throw in links and other tactics to trick unsuspecting victims. Once they’ve got their hooks in you, they’ll try to steal your personal information or get you to click on something harmful.
Here’s a screenshot of the scam text I received, so you know what to watch out for.
I think it's safe to say that the average Michigander would recognize this as a scam, but not everyone is so lucky. People who aren't as tech-savvy, those in a rush, or even the elderly might be more likely to fall for it, especially if they're stressed about unpaid bills or unexpected charges.
I think this scam is pretty easy to spot, especially since Michigan doesn’t have toll roads. That’s kind of a dead giveaway.
As soon as you get one of these texts, delete it right away.
