Halloween is less than two weeks away, and already there are trunk-or-treat events and parties popping up everywhere. While it’s a fun time of year, it can be extremely dangerous if you have a dog at home who’s a bit of a troublemaker and likes to get into things he’s not supposed to.

What Halloween Candy Is Dangerous for Dogs?

We really should be asking what candy is safe, because pretty much all Halloween candy is a bad idea. Chocolate is the biggest threat. Even a small piece can make a dog really sick, especially dark or baking chocolate.

According to the FDA, sugar-free gum and candy are just as bad because they often have xylitol, which can cause serious liver damage. And don’t forget about raisins, which can lead to kidney failure.

What About Other Candy?

It’s not just chocolate or sugar-free treats you have to worry about. Candies like Sweet Tarts, Starburst, and Skittles might not have xylitol, but they’re still packed with sugar and artificial coloring that can mess with your dog’s stomach. Licorice can be even worse if it’s the real black kind since it can cause heart problems in large amounts. Hard candies, caramel, and taffy are also choking hazards or can lead to serious stomach blockages.

Basically, if it came from the Halloween candy bowl, it’s best to keep it far away from your dog.

It’s not just the candy either. Wrappers can cause blockages if your dog swallows them, and it doesn’t take much to land you in the vet’s office. Trust me, I’ve been down that road before, and it’s no fun.

Look, it's pretty simple, keep your candy bowl up high and make sure the kids know not to share with the dog. If your dog does manage to get into something, call your vet or the Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661.

If you’d like your dog to join in on the fun, there are some treats out there for them too. Just pick up some pumpkin flavored dog biscuits and that will definitely do the trick.

Christmas Foods That Are Dangerous for Dogs

Avoid giving dogs Christmas table scraps due to the potential toxicity of certain foods like onions and chocolate, the risk of pancreatitis from high-fat dishes, and the hazards of cooked bones splintering. Seasonings and new foods can cause digestive upset.
