New malware reportedly has the ability to access Android phones in unprecedented and terrifying ways including making phone calls and spying on you via your camera... even when your phone is off! And people were worried about Facebook Messenger.

AVG reports that the malicious software basically hijacks your Android phone and that it can even make it appear like the phone is off... but it isn't. While your phone is essentially "playing dead," it could be controlled externally by a third party, who could make calls, take pictures and video with the camera and complete other functions that were not specified in the article.

The malware first appeared in Chinese app stores and infected about 10,000 phones. Currently, only Android phones running  v.5 (Lollipop) or older are believed to be at risk, which has to be a relief to iPhone users. Don't get too comfortable though, if this type of malware exists, it's only a matter of time before every kind of phone is at risk... except Blackberry. No self-respecting hacker would waste time making malware for those pieces of garbage. It would be like making a complex computer virus that infects an 8-Bit Nintendo Entertainment System or takes down Myspace.
