Food recalls happen all the time, and usually, it’s just a few people who get sick. Sadly, this time six people died, including one here in Michigan.

According to Fox 2 Detroit, one person in Michigan has died after eating contaminated pasta linked to a nationwide listeria outbreak. In total, six people have died across the country, and at least 27 have gotten sick. Two of those illnesses happened here in Michigan.

The recalled products came from Nate’s Fine Foods and were sold at major grocery chains, including Kroger, Trader Joe’s, Sprouts, Walmart, Albertsons, and Giant Eagle. Some of the pasta salads and meals are already past their expiration dates, but others are still current, so double-check your fridge if you buy premade pasta meals.

A few examples from the recall list include Kroger deli pasta salads, Trader Joe’s Cajun Style Blackened Chicken Breast Fettuccine Alfredo, Sprouts smoked mozzarella pasta salad, Scott and Jon’s shrimp scampi bowls, and several Marketside pasta products sold at Walmart. If you have any premade pasta meals at home, it is worth checking the full recall list on the FDA's website just to be safe.

Listeria is no joke, especially for pregnant women, older adults, and anyone with a weaker immune system. Symptoms can hit the next day or take weeks to show up. We’re talking fever, muscle aches, headaches, confusion, and even balance issues. And yeah, believe it or not, it can take up to ten weeks to kick in.

If you have any of these recalled items, throw them out immediately and clean any surfaces they touched. If you ate one and start feeling off, call your doctor right away. Better safe than sorry.
